Bias knitting provides the perfect blend of simplicity and engaging knitting, while an easily memorizable two-row pattern repeat is simple enough for mindless knitting and engaging enough to keep you knitting. The eyelet moss stitch also creates a lovely open texture without being too hole-y while also being the perfect stitch pattern for blending subtle fades. As it widens, second and third colors are brought in using intarsia to create V-shaped sections of color that turn into three long stripes as they travel along the edge. The twisted-stitch lace pattern that forms the largest block of color is engaging to knit while being easy to memorize. The intarsia, varying stitch patterns, and short rows lengths all combine to make this a fast and enjoyable project. With a nice mix of stockinette and garter, it is quite enjoyable to knit; just engaging enough to stay interesting without requiring too much brain power.

Measurements
Depth - 22in (56cm)
Wingspan - 72in (183cm)

Gauge
18 sts x 30 rows = 4in (10cm) in stockinette after blocking

Yarn
Garthenor Ronas - fingering weight - 50g, 230yds (210m)
Sample used
2 skeins - Color A - Sandstone
1 skein - Color B - Moorit
1 skein - Color C - Chalk
or
For 3 color version
460yds (420m) fingering weight in Color A
230yds (210m) fingering weight in Color B
230yds (210m) fingering weight in Color C
or
For 2 color version
460 yds (420m) fingering weight in Color A
460 yds (420m) fingering weight in Color B

Needles
US 2.5 (3.0mm) 40in (100cm) circular needles or size needed to obtain gauge

Notions
4 stitch markers
scissors
tapestry needle
blocking supplies

Copyright June 2020, all rights reserved.

Lady of Rohan is a simple, elegant rectangular shawl knitted on the bias to create a large chevron. The sequence knitting of the first two sections mimics the organic beauty of forest textures, such as patches of moss or the bark of a tree. The texture then gradually fades into a 3x3 rib, reminiscent of the trunks of trees reaching upwards, before resolving slowly into an ever-so-slightly-ruffled eyelet border with the airy lightness of wind in the leaves. Yarns with variegation or heavy speckling will likely interfere with the stitch patterns used throughout the shawl.

You will also want to make sure you have enough contrast between colors for the stitch patterns to have their full effect. In particular, you will want high contrast between colors B and C and moderate contrast between colors D and E.

Needles/Hooks
US 1.5 (2.5mm) circular needle
US 2 (2.75mm) circular needle (optional for clue 2)
US B/1 (2.25mm) crochet hook (optional)
Or
size(s) needed to obtain gauge

Notions
13 stitch markers
Tapestry needle
Blocking supplies

Pattern has been tech edited and test knit.

Copyright 2026, Refracted Light Fiber Arts
